The history of women in the Mackinac area is sketchy at best since most records, written by men, related to military or commercial affairs.

Fort Michilimackinac was occupied by the French from 1715 to 1760. Even though this was a remote outpost, the troops were arelady accustomed to long marches, the use of snow shoes and the handling of boats.

 

 

 

                     

 

E2 Ezekiel Solomon

Ezekiel Soloman was a native of Berlin, Germany who served with the British Army. He moved to Fort Michilimackinac in the summer of 1761.

 

 

 

     

 

2B Lieutenant William Leslye

Leslye first entered the army as ensign of the 60th in 1758, then promoted to lieutenancy in 1759.

 

 

 

 

 

      

 

 

              2N Matchekewis

(Match-ee-coo-iss) Matchekewis, also known as Kaigwiaidosa, was born in 1735 in an area that is known as Alpena today.
